Solar-Powered Plane Lands Safely After
26-Hour Flight
An experimental solar-powered aircraft landed safely in Switzerland Thursday after successfully flying through the night after a record 26-hour flight. The aircraft used super-efficient solar cells and batteries to stay aloft after the sun went down. During the flight it reached a height of 28,500 feet. It was also highest altitude ever recorded by a solar-powered plane.

A rights group said Monday it would take "a miracle" to win the war and restore peace in Afghanistan under the inept government of President Hamid Karzai, despite a massive surge in US troops. Afghanistan Rights Monitor (ARM) says the surge has driven violence to its worst levels since 2001, with 14 civilians killed or wounded on average each day. ARM says in a new report: "Contrary to President Barrack Obama's promise that the deployment ... would 'disrupt, dismantle and defeat' Taliban insurgents and their al Qaeda allies in the region, the insurgency has become more resilient, multi-structured and deadly." The report added the 30,000-strong troop increase was also clouding U.S. foreign policy objectives, with regional powers such as Pakistan, India and Iran flexing their muscles in the country ahead of an expected U.S. and NATO pullout, starting next year. Missing Iranian Scientist Appears at
Pakistani Embassy in US
Shahram Amiri, the missing Iranian nuclear scientist, who Tehran says was kidnapped a year ago by the CIA, has taken refuge in Pakistan's US embassy. A Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman said Amiri was seeking repatriation to Iran. Some reports say he worked for Iran’s atomic energy organization and had in-depth knowledge of its nuclear program. ABC News reported in March Amiri had defected and was helping the CIA, revealing valuable information about the Iranian nuclear program. But earlier this month, Tehran said it had proof he was being held in the US. The BBC's former correspondent in Tehran says Iran's version seems to be backed up by events unfolding in Washington. Amiri's sudden appearance is a major embarrassment for US spy agencies and could lead to a diplomatic stand-off. Iran says Amiri was kidnapped. US
sources said he defected and was spilling the beans on the Iranian nuclear program. INNworldreport.net
Israel Weighs Responses
to 'Barrage' of
International Criticism
Israel's diplomatic and defense ministries are debating how to respond to a "barrage" of international investigations into the country's conduct. Israeli officials say the most disconcerting probe is the UN committee charged with examining the credibility of Israel's court system in the wake of the Goldstone report on last winter's invasion of Gaza.
Two other international probes are set to begin over Israel's deadly May 31 raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla - one appointed by the UN secretary general and the other by the UN Human Rights’ Council. The Human Rights’ panel is charged with examining the efficiency, independence and professionalism of Israel's court system and its adherence to internationally accepted standards.
Israel’s foreign and justice ministries are pushing for a policy change that would lead to Israeli recognition of the probe and full cooperation with it. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to decide what Israel's official response should be. INNworldreport.net
Ireland Seeks to Block Israel’s
Access to Data on EU Citizens
Ireland is seeking to stop an EU initiative that would enable Israel to receive sensitive information about European citizens. Irish justice minister Dermott Ahern said over the weekend since Israel allegedly used forged Irish passports in the assassination of Hamas official Mohammed al-Mabhouh in Dubai, Israel should not be allowed access to this data.
