China Objects to US
Sanctions
Against Iran
China said Tuesday the US and other countries should not expand the latest U.N. sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program. China did not exercise its veto last month when the U.N. Security Council approved sanctions that target Iran's Revolutionary Guard, ballistic missiles and nuclear-related investments. The US followed that up Thursday when Barack Obama signed a bill imposing tough unilateral sanctions against gasoline exports to Iran. It also bans U.S. banks from doing business with foreign banks that provide services to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The U.N. sanctions seek to punish Iran for rejecting proposals to halt uranium enrichment and take its nuclear fuel from abroad. The West fears Iran is developing nuclear weapons, though Iran says it is seeking nuclear power only for peaceful uses. Iran meets 11 percent of China's energy
needs and Chinese companies have major investments in Iranian energy extraction projects and the construction of roads, bridges and power plants.
Fidel Castro Gives Rare Televised
Interview
In news from Cuba, Fidel Castro appeared on Cuban television Monday giving one of his first interviews since falling ill four years ago. The 83-year-old former president warned the United States not to invade Iran. Castro said that any American attack on Iran would face much more resistance than the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Fidel Castro: "Iraq had no weapons. It was a country divided between Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis. None of those divisions exist in Iran. That will be tough. The worst thing will be the resistance they encounter. That is guaranteed, unlike in Iraq."
Israel Launches Spy Satellite
The Israeli government has launched a spy satellite apparently capable of monitoring Iran. The Horizon-9 satellite was launched from a southern Israeli military base. The launch comes shortly after the former head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency said Israel should launch a military attack on Iran. Speaking to an Israeli conference, Shabtai Shavit said, "Since there is an ongoing war, since the threat

(Blair frm pg 4) when in fact Tehran wanted them to succeed in installing a stable government in Baghdad. Dalton, Britain's ambassador to Iran from 2003 to 2006, said Blair made "a series of very bad decisions" about the legality of the Iraq invasion. He described George Bush’s description of Iran as part of an "axis of evil" as a "monstrous error." As international pressure mounts over Tehran's alleged efforts to acquire nuclear weapons,
of Cargo Bound for Iran
The Russian government Monday issued a formal complaint to the UN Security Council about the German government’s seizures of Russian cargo bound for Iran and the detention and questioning of men involved in the deal. The equipment was destined for the Russian-built Bushehr nuclear reactor. German officials seized it citing sanctions against Iran.
US Gives
Israel Secret Nuclear
Guarantee
Israeli sources say the US has secretly given Israel a "written guarantee" that obliges Washington to sell Israel nuclear fission materials to "produce electricity." Washington has also vowed to "publicly announce" Israel is a responsible entity and can "contain its capabilities." It’s an open secret Israel possesses 200 to 300 nuclear warheads, even though Tel Aviv has neither confirmed nor denied having any. Whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu spent 18 years in jail for exposing Israel's nuclear arsenal. Israel sensed a breach in the US-Israeli partnership recently when Washington supported an Egyptian proposal to hold a conference in 2012 on a nuclear-free Middle East. However, the White House said Wednesday Barack Obama had vowed to shield Israel from being "singled out" at the proposed meeting or at a September gathering of the International Atomic Energy Agency, where the issue of Israel's nuclear weapons is expected to top the agenda.
