NY Limits "Stop and Frisk" Database

New York Governor David Paterson has signed a measure that will end the storage of hundreds of thousands of names of people who were stopped and frisked by police without facing charges. Over 500,000 people were questioned under "stop and frisk" last year, the vast majority African Americans and Latinos. Paterson said maintaining a database of their names violates basic democratic principles.

Gov. David Paterson: "It disallows the use of personal data from innocent people who have not done anything wrong. They may be suspicious. They may be thought to be future threats. But that is not a policy for a democracy."

In a statement, Donna Lieberman of the New York Civil Liberties Union praised the move, saying, "Innocent people stopped by the police for doing nothing more than going to school, work or the subway should not become permanent criminal suspects." Democracynow, org

Ex-Police Officer Avoids Jail in

Bicycle Assault Case

A former New York police officer who was videotaped tackling a bicyclist has escaped a prison sentence. The then-officer, Patrick Pogan, violently knocked the cyclist off his bike during a Critical Mass bike ride in 2008. Pogan then charged the cyclist with attempted assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Pogan was convicted in April of lying about the incident in his police complaint. He had faced up to four years in prison but has been given a conditional discharge. Democracynow.org

Warning Issued to Top Texan

Appeals Court Judge

The presiding judge of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has been given a public warning for misconduct in a closely watched case. Sharon Keller has faced scrutiny after refusing to hear a last-minute appeal from a death row prisoner scheduled to be executed that night. Keller reportedly denied an appeal from the lawyers for Michael Wayne Richard at 5:20 pm on September 25th, 2007, saying, quote, “We close at five.” Richard had been on death row for two decades. He was killed later that night by lethal injection. In its warning, the State Commission on Judicial Conduct said Keller had "cast public discredit on the judiciary."

Most Want Afghanistan Withdrawal Timeline

A new CBS News poll shows most Americans say things are going badly for the U.S. in Afghanistan, worse than they were two months ago. The poll found most Americans also want a timetable for withdrawal. 62 percent of Americans say the war is going badly, up from 49 percent in May. 33 percent say they don’t want large numbers of U.S. troops in Afghanistan for another year. Philip Morris Using Child Labor in

Kazak Tobacco Fields

The tobacco giant Philip Morris is under scrutiny for using child labor in remote areas of Kazakhstan. In a new report, Human Rights Watch says it’s documented at least seventy-two cases of child workers harvesting tobacco on farms that supply a Philip Morris-owned factory. The children were as young as ten years old. Harvesting tobacco would be a particularly dangerous task for children because of the exposure to high levels of nicotine. Philip Morris says it’s adopted "sweeping changes" to end child labor in its supply chain in response to the report’s findings. Democracynow.org
